Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) compiles a list of the safest vehicles for teens. This is a process that they started in 2020 to help parents find safe and affordable vehicles for their new drivers. In addition to safety features, the list considers factors like braking, crash test ratings, and ease of use.

Each Mazda model on the list has received an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award, which is reserved for the safest vehicles. They have average or better scores for braking and emergency and routine handling. Plus, they have earned good ratings in five IIHS tests: original moderate overlap front, original side, driver-side small overlap front, roof strength, and head restraints.
